What is an entry level role within the profession?

 

Trade assist

 

What qualifications/experience would you need for an entry level role?

 

We would consider people with experience as a second fix carpenter, shop fitter or labourer's with an eye for detail. Preferable qualifications would be a Carpentry qualification or someone who has completed their boatbuilder apprenticeship.

 

What are the most rewarding aspects of your profession? 

 

What you've achieved at the end of the day. Seeing the vessel sail away and that sense of joint achievement.

 

What do you like about working for Wight Shipyard/in the shipbuilding industry?

 

The diversity of the work i.e. no two boats are the same. It's exciting to be working on innovative designs and being part of a successful team/company.

 

The convenience of working locally and the fact you are part of keeping the company going for future employment opportunities for the next generation of Islanders.

 

What kind of attributes do you need to have to progress?

You need attention to detail, a good work ethic, to be hard working, a team player, reliable, adaptable and manual dexterity.

 

What would be the next step up?

 

An 'Improver'

 

Where can you get to within your trade? 

 

You can move to be a skilled worker and onto a Supervisor and then Manager/Head of Department.

 

What qualifications/training can you do to progress a career within your Profession?

You could do a design or CAD qualification.
